Should You Buy Auto Insurance Online?

A question that people often ask is whether they should buy auto insurance online. There are many trusted websites on the internet that offer great deals on car insurance. These days it seems as though everything is becoming more and more automated and easier. It is easy to compare rates and coverage options of various top companies to find the best deal. For most people that do not yet have insurance, turning to the internet has become a popular option. Do I think that purchasing car insurance online is the best way to get coverage? Maybe. It’s really all about personal preference and the degree to which you are comfortable with shopping online for your insurance coverage.

First of all, I can say that the internet is great resource for people to learn more about general auto insurance. You can get free quotes online in addition to comparing rates of companies that you are considering buying your coverage through. The other nice thing about the internet is that you can read extensively about the coverage details that each company provides. Even if you are an individual that does not want to use the net to buy a policy, I recommend using it as a resource to help get you started. When people come to me and ask what to do in order to get the cheapest possible car insurance, I tell them to look online.

Sure there are going to be some companies that I would label as “scams,” but most people are able to distinguish the good coverage from the bad. Anytime you are reviewing a website of a company like Geico or Progressive (that you have seen advertised on television), you know that they are not going to scam you. On the other hand, it is important to be aware of companies that you may have never heard of or seen advertising. Make sure that companies are legitimate insurers before you even waste your time getting a quote. There are going to be a few companies that are fairly shady looking and likely have fake testimonials written. You will want to make sure that you are not getting tricked into signing up for any service that you cannot fully trust.

When getting free quotes, make sure that you do not give out too much personal information. If you are required to enter your credit card number and other private information to get a quote from a company that you have never heard of, take precautionary measures before doing so. Also, read the terms and conditions closely because entering a credit card number usually implies that you will be charged money, even if the website claims to provide “free quotes.”

In my opinion, the best approach to getting a reliable auto insurance policy is to use the internet as a tool to help you find some reliable companies and get quotes, but not for the transaction. After you have figured out which companies you would like to find more about (after reading online), you should schedule to meet with some representatives. I have found that most people are able to better understand insurance policies if they talk “in person” with an agent; there is a lot of “unclear” information on most auto insurance websites. The internet is a great starting point for getting car insurance, but I don’t usually recommend buying auto insurance online.
